Recently, Facebook has taken it upon themselves to take a bigger step into the E commerce world. As smartphones account for about a quarter of digital purchases, Facebook do not want to miss out on what is shaping to be a huge consumer habit. So, the social media company have stated its mobile app will feature a ‘Marketplace’ tab.
‘Marketplace’ will compete with e commerce websites such as Ebay; and will soon be available across Europe. Initially debuting in the US, it has found early success and expanded to Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Chile.
Facebook have not declared how many people are using ‘Marketplace’, but in the US alone 18 million items were posted in May. Also, there are about 550 million people who visit formal buy and sell groups on Facebook each month anyway. This obviously suggests that there is a massive opportunity to take advantage of.
Mobile E commerce is growing rapidly, attracting millions of users all around the world. Facebook has taken the unique move to implement a way of connecting friends of friends who live nearby whilst also shopping online. This is key in making ‘Marketplace’ stand apart from other e commerce websites.
With the new feature it is possible for Facebook users to swiftly browse and create for sale posts. Seller and buyers are contacted via Messenger, which now supports payments and other tools. To ensure user safety and prevent the sale of illicit items, intelligence tools have been utilised to analyse each post shared on the new service.
Facebook have not only provided a platform for people to sell for example, household products, but also have included standalone categories. These are jobs and tickets, aimed at helping smaller businesses find workers and people to sell any tickets they can no longer use. .
A lot of people are looking forward to how ‘Marketplace’ will turn out. It could reveal a new dimension for e commerce and influence other companies to re-evaluate their services. If you are interested in knowing more about E commerce, get in touch with us at Web Consultancy.
