Twitter is one of the world’s most popular social media sites, but users will understand the frustration that sometimes comes from the character limit – it can be hard to really express yourself when you’re only allowed to use 140 characters. However, there is some good news for tweeters who want a little more space to air their views and share information, as it seems they’re currently working on a way to let users go beyond the limit and compose longer tweets.
It’s not clear yet exactly how the new long-content format will look or work, or even how long the new character limit will be, but the aim is to increase user numbers and give people more options in the way they want to use the platform. According to the Wall Street Journal, the project is named 140 Plus and Twitter are currently experimenting and discussing the different ways they may be able to give users a larger character limit.
It seems like this move could go one of two ways: it could attract new users and give existing ones a brand new and exciting way to use the platform, or on the other hand it could remove one of the most unique characteristics of Twitter, the need to be concise, catchy and memorable. Whatever happens, it seems like it’ll be a little while before Twitter actually implements this new development, so we’ll have to wait and see.
